The work
MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES — First Light explores the quiet intimacy of morning, where sunlight, sea air, and stillness enter a private Mediterranean interior.

Set beside open shutters overlooking the coast, the work captures the first moments of the day before urgency begins. Golden light moves across the room, catching the textured linen, weathered walls, the figure’s skin, and the cup held between her hands.

Beyond the window, the Mediterranean stretches toward the horizon. Blue water, distant land, flowering vines, and open sky create a sense of possibility without disturbing the stillness of the room.

The figure appears entirely absorbed in the moment. She is not posed for the viewer. Her presence feels natural and self-contained — held between warmth, light, and the world opening quietly beyond the shutters.

Built through luminous contrast, painterly texture, and layered Mediterranean colour, the work draws from contemporary figurative painting traditions where the body, interior, and landscape carry equal emotional weight.

What remains is morning.

The feeling of having nowhere else to be for a little while.

A moment before the day asks anything of you.

This is not art that decorates. It occupies.
