WALL STUDIES — Night Signal explores the tension between obscurity and the smallest evidence of presence.

The composition begins in darkness. Dense passages of charcoal, black, deep navy, and muted petrol blue create a surface that feels architectural without resolving into a recognisable place. Colour emerges gradually rather than announcing itself, giving the work a sense of depth that changes with distance.

A pale vertical form cuts through the darker field, irregular and weathered rather than precise. It divides the surface without completely separating it, carrying traces of stone, plaster, and erased structure.

Near the right edge, a restrained burgundy passage interrupts the cooler palette. Small in scale but deliberate in placement, it behaves almost like a distant signal — something visible for a moment against an otherwise quiet field.

A dark horizontal line crosses the lower composition, giving the work its structural weight. Above and below it, layers appear worn, covered, exposed, and rebuilt. The surface holds evidence of previous marks without revealing their origin.

Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The woven surface strengthens the contrast between dense dark passages, mineral blue, pale vertical texture, and the isolated burgundy mark, allowing Night Signal to become increasingly architectural at larger scale.

What remains is a presence within the dark.

Almost hidden.

Still there.
