FIGURE STUDY IV — Presence is the point in the series where restraint becomes force.
Unlike the earlier works, this piece does not recede into atmosphere. It advances. The deep mineral red field behind her carries pressure, heat and movement — textured like oxidised plaster and layered pigment rather than background alone.
She is caught mid-turn. Back partially exposed, gaze lifted sideways, expression unreadable. Not inviting. Not defensive. Entirely self-possessed.
The composition depends on tension between stillness and heat:
the black draped form absorbs light while the red field pushes forward around it. On museum matte paper, those surfaces become softer, heavier and more physical — closer to painted pigment than digital image.
Presented in a black gallery frame, the work shifts from image into object.
This is not decorative portraiture.
