The work
WALL STUDIES — Proof of Life explores the moment when a single mark becomes evidence of existence.
The composition begins with an almost erased surface. Chalk, warm limestone, sand, and softened grey form a quiet field marked by abrasion, faint architectural traces, and the suggestion of something that has already been covered over.
Across that restraint, cobalt blue moves through the work in one continuous gesture. It rises, curves, narrows, and returns, refusing the stillness around it. The mark is neither decorative nor perfectly controlled. Its irregular edges, changes in density, and visible interruptions allow the movement of the hand to remain present.
Smaller traces appear beneath and beside it. A dark mark interrupts the lower field while restrained rust and faded pigment sit almost buried within the surface. They do not compete with the blue. They exist as remnants, giving the work the feeling of a wall that has accumulated evidence over time.
The strength of Proof of Life lies in the imbalance between one decisive gesture and everything that has been quietened around it. The surface feels worn, but the blue remains immediate. Something has survived the erasure.
Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The woven surface strengthens the mineral ground, distressed edges, and saturated cobalt gesture, allowing the contrast between restraint and movement to become increasingly tactile at larger scale.
What remains is evidence.
A mark was made.
Something was here.
