WALL STUDIES — Orbit explores the tension between movement and the forces that hold it in place.

The composition begins with a dense black field, layered with worn pigment, abrasion, and traces of earlier marks. Against it, a broad ivory gesture travels through the work in an almost complete arc. Its surface is imperfect and physical, shifting between heavy paint and exposed texture rather than resolving into a precise geometric form.

The curve creates movement, but the composition never becomes weightless. A concentrated red passage interrupts the upper right of the work, introducing a point of tension against the monochrome structure. Small traces of ochre and muted gold remain embedded within the darker ground, appearing only where the surface allows them through.

Near the centre, a fine circular detail creates a second, quieter orbit within the larger gesture. Its scale is deliberately restrained. Where the ivory arc commands the surface, this smaller mark asks to be discovered.

Orbit is built on contrast. Movement against stillness. Ivory against black. A single red interruption against an otherwise controlled palette. The work feels expansive without losing its discipline.

Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The woven surface strengthens the broad ivory gesture, distressed black ground, red intervention, and subtle metallic-toned traces, allowing the composition to hold greater weight at larger scale.

What remains is movement held in tension.
