WALL STUDIES — Counterweight explores the way opposing forces can create stability rather than conflict.

The composition is constructed through blocks of burnt orange, rust, ochre, weathered ivory, and deep black. Each area carries a different visual weight, creating a surface that feels deliberately uneven yet carefully held together.

The warmer passages dominate the upper and lower sections of the work, while black structural forms interrupt them with greater density. Their edges remain rough and imperfect, exposing scraped pigment, worn texture, and traces of earlier marks beneath the surface.

A pale vertical passage divides the composition without creating a clean separation. It behaves more like a structural seam, allowing the heavier areas on either side to remain connected.

Near the centre, a fine circular mark introduces a quieter form of tension. Small in relation to the surrounding blocks, it becomes a visual pivot — a point around which the competing weights of the composition appear to settle.

Counterweight is built on controlled imbalance. Warmth against darkness. Density against exposed ground. Heavy forms against a single restrained line. The work never becomes symmetrical, but it remains resolved.

Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The woven surface strengthens the distressed pigment, layered mineral tones, black structural passages, and warm rust-orange fields, allowing the contrast between weight and space to become more pronounced at larger scale.

What remains is equilibrium under pressure.
