The work
MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES — High Summer explores the stillness that arrives when summer reaches its fullest intensity.
Set high above the sea, the work opens onto whitewashed architecture descending towards deep blue water and distant land. The sky is clear and expansive, touched by soft cloud, while bougainvillea enters the composition in bloom. Light falls hard across stone, skin, and plaster, giving the entire scene a sense of clarity, heat, and quiet exposure.
The figure remains central, but never performative. Dressed in white and turned away from the viewer, she sits within the scene rather than presenting herself to it. Her gaze moves outward, towards distance and light, creating a sense of inwardness within an open setting. What the work holds is not narrative, but presence.
Painterly surface and broken colour keep the image grounded in a Mediterranean language of light, atmosphere, and material presence. Flesh, sea, architecture, and sky are bound together through visible mark-making rather than polished finish. The relationship between body and place remains calm, sensual, and self-contained.
Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The textured surface deepens the stone, white fabric, saturated sea, and sun-struck architecture, allowing the image to hold greater weight and tactility on the wall.
