MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES — Crimson Undertow explores the point where resistance ends without becoming defeat.

The woman is suspended just beneath the surface of the Mediterranean, surrounded by dense cobalt and ultramarine. Her dark hair moves into the water while fractured light passes across her face, shoulders, and skin. There is no shore and no visible escape from the blue.

An immense crimson fabric travels around her body in broad, fluid forms. It conceals, releases, and gathers again, behaving less like clothing than a living current. Red and blue move against one another with equal force, creating a composition that feels both controlled and unstable.

Her body yields to the water, but her gaze does not. She looks upwards with complete awareness, holding the viewer from within the movement surrounding her. The work is sensual without submission and exposed without fragility.

Thick impasto, broken reflections, and visible painterly marks dissolve the boundaries between skin, water, hair, and fabric. The figure remains real, but the sea continually interrupts her form, allowing painterly realism to move towards abstraction.

Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The textured surface strengthens the submerged red fabric, fractured water, layered cobalt passages, and the contrast between the woman’s stillness and the current moving around her.
