The work
MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES — Black Tide explores the meeting point between control and instinct.
The composition is built around three elemental forces: black form, blue water, and pale stone. The horse stands chest-deep in the sea, its dark body set against saturated cobalt, while a sculptural mass of limestone cuts through the image at the left. The setting is reduced and severe. Nothing distracts from the weight of the encounter.
The figure stands close to the horse, one hand resting against its body. Her gaze is direct and self-contained, and the exchange between woman and animal remains quiet rather than dramatic. What gives the work its tension is not movement, but restraint. Strength is present in both figures, but neither needs to perform it.
Thick impasto, broken reflections, and visible painterly marks give the work its physical force. Black, ultramarine, warm skin, and limestone are held in deliberate contrast, allowing the horse, body, water, and stone to read as one commanding composition. The image feels intimate, but never soft.
Presented on canvas, the work gains additional physical presence. The textured surface deepens the dark body of the horse, the fractured blue of the sea, the wet sheen of the figure, and the rough solidity of the limestone.
What remains is controlled intensity.
Nothing yields.
Everything holds.
This is not art that decorates. It occupies.
