FIGURE STUDY IX — Defiance explores confrontation through restraint.
The figure turns partially away, yet the gaze remains fixed — steady, withheld and entirely unmoved. Dark gestural forms rise through the composition in sharp directional movement, surrounding the body without overpowering it. The force here is controlled rather than explosive.
Unlike the more atmospheric works in the series, this composition relies on tension, pressure and structural contrast. Warm plaster tones and oxidised ember reds push against dense black forms, creating a surface that feels weighted, architectural and unresolved.
On museum matte paper, the restrained palette becomes softer and more tactile. The deep blacks absorb light rather than reflect it, while the mineral reds and aged ivory tones gain physical depth closer to layered pigment than digital image.
Presented in a black gallery frame, the work reads with greater authority and spatial presence — less decorative object, more psychological structure.
