FIGURE STUDY IX — Defiance explores confrontation through restraint.
The figure turns partially away, yet the gaze remains fixed — steady, direct, and emotionally withheld. Black gestural forms move through the composition in sharp directional arcs, surrounding the body without overpowering it. There is force here, but it is controlled.
The composition relies on tension rather than movement alone.
Warm plaster tones and fractured ember reds push against dense black forms, creating a surface that feels atmospheric, weighted, and unresolved. The posture remains upright throughout, allowing the figure to hold authority even as the painterly structure surrounding her becomes increasingly unstable.
Nothing softens the image.
Nothing asks for permission.
The palette remains deliberately restrained — burnt sienna, oxidised umber, aged ivory, deep black — allowing contrast and gesture to carry the emotional pressure of the work.
